Michele Chiarlo Cipressi Nizza 2022 in magnum is a Piedmontese red wine made from Barbera and released under the Nizza DOCG designation. It comes from the historic Barbera area around Nizza Monferrato, where the grape is treated with real seriousness and a clear sense of origin.The fruit is sourced from vineyards in the Castelnuovo Calcea-Mombercelli zone, connected to Tenuta La Court. The name Cipressi refers to the cypress trees on the hilltops, a small but telling link between the wine and its landscape. The vineyards sit at about 230 to 280 metres, with soils made up of Astian sands and Sant'Agata Fossili marls, including clay, limestone, silt, sand and marine-derived elements.
The 2022 growing season was dry and started early. To protect aromatic freshness and reduce the effect of sun and heat, foliage was kept above the bunches. Harvest began by hand on 11 September, around a week earlier than usual, with healthy, ripe grapes.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with a gentle maceration, followed by at least 18 months of maturation, including 12 months in large oak casks. Rather than pushing oak to the foreground, the wine keeps the focus on ripe Barbera fruit, structure and a savoury finish. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte. The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide.
