Matallana 2021 is Telmo Rodríguez's way of looking at Ribera del Duero through a wider lens. Rather than presenting a single-vineyard statement, it brings together fruit from five villages in the province of Burgos and a series of individual parajes. The interest lies in that mosaic: different soils, landscapes and local plant material brought into one coherent red wine.
Tinto Fino forms the core of the blend, selected from good old Ribera vineyards, with Navarro, Valenciano, Albillo and other varieties playing their part. The vineyards are organically farmed, the grapes are hand-harvested in crates and fermentation takes place with native yeasts. Fourteen months in French oak barrels give the wine shape without taking attention away from its origin.
