Product info about Brora 35y 2013

Brora 35y 2013 is a Highland single malt with a distinctly rare character. The essential details already set the tone: 35 years of age, a 2013 release, and a limited outturn of 2,944 bottles. With its collector's item status and the indication that these are the last bottles, this is clearly far removed from an everyday whisky purchase.

Matured in oak cask and bottled at cask strength, 49.9%, it keeps a close connection to its cask origins. The appeal here lies in the combination of age, provenance and restraint: Brora as the name, Highland as the region, and a long maturation shaping the whisky without needing unnecessary decoration.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a bottle for those who appreciate older single malt with a serious peated signature. Peat is the leading element in the profile, with wood, spice, fruit and a salty edge all clearly present around it. It is the kind of whisky that asks for time and attention, especially because scarcity is part of its story.

About BRORA

Brora is a Scottish single malt whisky brand originating from the village of Brora in Sutherland, in the northern Highlands of Scotland. The original Brora distillery was founded in 1819 under the name Clynelish and later changed its name when a new Clynelish distillery was built next to it in 1968. From that moment on, the old distillery was referred to as Brora, mainly to avoid confusion with its modern neighbor. Brora was known for producing whisky with a distinctly smoky, peated style, which was exceptional for a Highland distillery, particularly during the periods of the 1960s and 1970s. The distillery closed its doors in 1983, making Brora whisky a highly sought-after and rare bottling among enthusiasts and collectors. In 2021, the distillery was reopened after an extensive restoration by Diageo, the current owner. Since the reopening, single malt whisky has once again been produced on a small scale, with respect for the character of the original Brora style. Thanks to this combination of tradition, unique flavor profile and fascinating history, Brora has built up a special reputation within the world of Scottish whisky.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Brora 35y 2013?

Brora 35y 2013 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Brora 35y 2013 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Brora 35y 2013 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Brora 35y 2013 a single cask whisky?

No, Brora 35y 2013 is not a single cask whisky.

Is Brora 35y 2013 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Brora 35y 2013 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Brora 35y 2013 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Brora 35y 2013 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Brora 35y 2013 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Brora 35y 2013 a whisky to invest in?

Brora 35y 2013 is a whisky of Brora that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Brora 35y 2013 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Brora 35y 2013 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a briny character. Indeed, this saltiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this saltiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Brora 35y 2013 a tarred whisky?

Yes, Brora 35y 2013 is a whisky with an intensely textured flavour profile: you will be able to detect the smokiness of this whisky right from the first sip from your glass. It is a typical characteristic flavour in a particular type whisky that you have to (learn to) love.

Is Brora 35y 2013 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Brora 35y 2013 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Brora 35y 2013 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Brora 35y 2013 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Brora 35y 2013 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Brora 35y 2013 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Brora 35y 2013 have a high alcohol content?

Brora 35y 2013 is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Brora 35y 2013 an independent bottling?

No, Brora 35y 2013 is an official bottling of Brora.

Is Brora 35y 2013 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Brora 35y 2013 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Brora 35y 2013 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Brora 35y 2013 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Brora 35y 2013 whisky from Brora is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
