Our buying advice for Clynelish 1995 26y

The Clynelish 1995 26y is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who appreciate an exclusive single cask whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Highland and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 56,2%. This powerful and intensely spicy whisky demands a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky because its profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single cask whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Product info about Clynelish 1995 26y

Clynelish 1995 26y is a Highland single malt with a very clear sense of origin. It was distilled on 21 November 1995 and bottled on 23 March 2022 by The Nectar for the Daily Dram series, after 26 years of maturation.

The key point here is its individuality. This is a single cask whisky from a sherry butt, bottled at cask strength at 56.2%. Rather than being adjusted to fit a broader house style, it presents one particular cask in a direct and concentrated way.

Only 515 bottles were released, and with the last bottles now available, this Clynelish has a naturally limited place in the selection at Drankenshop Broekmans. Its appeal lies in that combination of age, independent bottling and the finite nature of a single cask.

The supplied profile points towards a pronounced fruit and spice-driven whisky, with a noticeable layer of wood influence. For drinkers exploring mature Highland single malts, this is a bottle built around patience, cask identity and a very specific moment in Clynelish's maturation history.

The flavour profile is led by pronounced fruit and spice, supported by a clear but not separately detailed wood influence. At 56.2% cask strength, it carries a concentrated and forceful presence.

As no specific aroma descriptors are provided, the tasting description stays with the supported profile: fruit and spice are the central elements, wood adds structure, and the whisky shows the intensity associated with a 26-year-old single cask bottled at natural strength.

About CLYNELISH

The distillery originated in 1967 and was built across from the old distillery with the same name, which had already been established there since 1824. In 1969, this one was given the name ¢Brora». Brora produced the most peated single malt of the ¢Highlands». For this reason, it is sometimes called by enthusiasts the ¢The Lagavulin of the North». Clynelish is an exact copy of the most modern distillery on Islay, ¢Caol Ila». Only 1% of the production appears on the market as Single Malt, the rest is mainly used to blend ¢Johnnie Walker».

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Clynelish 1995 26y?

Clynelish 1995 26y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Clynelish 1995 26y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Clynelish 1995 26y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Clynelish 1995 26y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Clynelish 1995 26y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Clynelish 1995 26y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Clynelish 1995 26y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Clynelish 1995 26y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Clynelish 1995 26y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Clynelish 1995 26y is a whisky with an intensely spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Clynelish 1995 26y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Clynelish 1995 26y is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Clynelish 1995 26y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Clynelish 1995 26y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Clynelish 1995 26y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y an independent bottling?

Clynelish 1995 26y is a whisky of the Clynelish brand bottled by the independent bottler The Nectar. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Clynelish 1995 26y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Clynelish 1995 26y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Clynelish 1995 26y whisky from Clynelish is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
