Flavour notes

The flavour profile is led by spice, with lighter fruit, floral and wood notes sitting in a supporting role rather than taking over the whisky.

There is no emphasis on peat or salt here, so the character stays firmly in a spiced Speyside direction. At 48%, it has enough strength to give those elements clear definition without relying on smoke for impact.

Product info about Linkwood 2012 12y Art7

Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a Speyside single malt bottled by Signatory for the Artist Edition series. Distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2024, it spent 12 years in a Bourbon Barrel and was released at 48%, giving it a little more presence than a standard-strength whisky while remaining approachable in structure.

The appeal here lies in the focus of the release: one Linkwood single cask, presented as part of an artistic bottling series, with 1776 bottles produced. With the final bottles now indicated, it carries that extra sense of limited availability that makes independent bottlings interesting to follow.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Speyside selection we like for customers who enjoy exploring a distillery through a more specific cask-driven release. It is not positioned around peat or salty coastal notes; the profile points more clearly toward spice, supported by lighter fruity, floral and woody accents.

About LINKWOOD

Linkwood is a Scottish single malt whisky originating from the Speyside region, an area known for its smooth, elegant whiskies. The Linkwood distillery was originally founded in 1821 near Elgin and has since built a solid reputation, with a rich history dating back to the early days of Scottish whisky production. Although Linkwood is especially a beloved choice among connoisseurs, the brand itself is less often directly available as a distillery bottling; much of the produced spirit is used in blends, but regular official and independent single malt bottlings do also appear. Linkwood single malt is known for its refined, slightly floral and fruity character, sometimes with notes of grass and soft oak influences. Production takes place according to traditional methods, which contributes to the characteristic, subtle profile for which the distillery is valued. Linkwood is managed by Diageo, one of the largest players in the whisky world, and is part of their Flora & Fauna series, in which special distilleries are given extra attention. Thanks to the consistent quality and distinctive flavor profile, Linkwood is appreciated worldwide by those who love smooth, balanced Speyside whiskies.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7?

Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a single cask whisky?

Yes, Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a whisky at cask strength?

No, Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a whisky to invest in?

Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a whisky of Linkwood that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 an independent bottling?

Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a whisky of the Linkwood brand bottled by the independent bottler Signatory. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Linkwood 2012 12y Art7 whisky from Linkwood is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
