Product info about Aultmore 2014 10y

Aultmore is a Speyside single malt with a rather discreet profile as a standalone whisky, even though it is noted in the supplied information as an important component in Dewar's blends. That makes an independent single cask release like this a particularly interesting way to meet the distillery on its own terms.

This Aultmore 2014 10 year old was bottled in 2024 by the Campbeltown Whisky Company under the Watt Whisky name. It was drawn from a single hogshead, producing 319 bottles. Because it is a single cask whisky, this is a fixed snapshot of one individual cask rather than a repeatable batch.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottlings like this are valued for the directness they bring: one distillery, one cask, bottled without dilution at 56.9%. That cask strength presentation gives you the choice to taste it as bottled or add a little water yourself to adjust the intensity.

The supplied notes place this firmly in the style Mark Watt particularly appreciates: distillate-driven Speyside whisky, with fruit, a creamy impression and a spicy side that gives it definition.

The tasting profile is led by the distillate, with a fruity impression and a light floral touch in the background. Wood influence stays in a supporting role, while spice is more clearly present.

At 56.9% cask strength, it has a firm delivery. A few drops of water can soften the intensity and bring out the creamy, fruity side while keeping the direct single cask feel intact.

About AULTMORE

Aultmore was founded in 1895 and is located in Keith (Banffshire), making it a Speyside distillery. The name is derived from the Gaelic word An t-Allt Mòr and means great stream. It refers to the Auchinderran Burn where Aultmore gets its water. Initially, the distillery was powered by a waterwheel, but a little later this was replaced by a steam engine, which now stands only as an attraction at the distillery. Most of the production was used for blends, so official Aultmore bottlings are rather scarce.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Aultmore 2014 10y?

Aultmore 2014 10y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Aultmore 2014 10y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Aultmore 2014 10y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Aultmore 2014 10y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Aultmore 2014 10y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Aultmore 2014 10y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Aultmore 2014 10y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Aultmore 2014 10y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Aultmore 2014 10y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Aultmore 2014 10y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Aultmore 2014 10y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Aultmore 2014 10y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Aultmore 2014 10y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Aultmore 2014 10y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Aultmore 2014 10y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y an independent bottling?

Aultmore 2014 10y is a whisky of the Aultmore brand bottled by the independent bottler Campbeltown Whisky Company. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Aultmore 2014 10y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Aultmore 2014 10y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Aultmore 2014 10y whisky from Aultmore is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
