Flavour notes

The aroma opens with intense smoke, iodine and sea air, followed by a touch of white fruit and a light note of bourbon vanilla. It feels distinctly maritime, but with a fresher, fruitier layer underneath.

On the palate, peat and coastal notes remain at the centre. Sea salt, fresh citrus and white pepper give it drive, while a subtle fruity sweetness stays in the background. The finish is long and smoky, lingering on salt and citrus.

Product info about Bowmore 2010 15y

Bowmore 2010 15y is a very focused Islay single malt: one bourbon barrel, fifteen years of maturation, and bottled at cask strength by The Whisky Agency for Milroy's for TWA. Rather than presenting a broad house style, it captures the development of a single cask from one specific period.

Its character is built around coastal smoke, with a fresher fruit note sitting in the background. At 53.7%, the whisky keeps a direct, cask-strength presence in the glass, giving the maritime and peated side room to come through with real clarity.

For Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottling that speaks to drinkers who enjoy independent releases with a clear origin. Distilled in 2010 and bottled after fifteen years from a single bourbon barrel, it offers a sharply defined interpretation of Bowmore, with limited availability adding to its sense of immediacy.

The aroma opens with intense smoke, iodine and sea air, followed by a touch of white fruit and a light note of bourbon vanilla. It feels distinctly maritime, but with a fresher, fruitier layer underneath.

About BOWMORE

Bowmore is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and certainly the oldest on the island of Islay, founded in 1779. Bowmore is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that produces part of its own malt in a traditional ¶Kiln÷. The proximity of the sea gives Bowmore a unique character, with some of their warehouses even located below sea level! Bowmore is also the only distillery that has been visited by Queen Elizabeth II.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Bowmore 2010 15y?

Bowmore 2010 15y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Bowmore 2010 15y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Bowmore 2010 15y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Bowmore 2010 15y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Bowmore 2010 15y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Bowmore 2010 15y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Bowmore 2010 15y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Bowmore 2010 15y can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Bowmore 2010 15y is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Bowmore 2010 15y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Bowmore 2010 15y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Bowmore 2010 15y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Bowmore 2010 15y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Bowmore 2010 15y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Bowmore 2010 15y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y an independent bottling?

Bowmore 2010 15y is a whisky of the Bowmore brand bottled by the independent bottler The Whisky Agency. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Bowmore 2010 15y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Bowmore 2010 15y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Bowmore 2010 15y whisky from Bowmore is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
