Flavour notes

Testamatta 2019 brings together red fruit and darker cherry notes, with redcurrant, raspberry, Marasca cherry, dark cherry and plum at the centre. Around that fruit are touches of dried fruit, orange peel and blood orange, followed by Mediterranean herbs, dark spices, earthy notes and a gentle floral lift.

On the palate it is described as clear, linear and finely structured. The tannins are fine to polished, the freshness remains present, and the finish carries a mineral, sometimes chalky impression. This is a precise and layered expression of Sangiovese rather than a heavily extracted one.

Product info about Bibi Graetz Testamatta 2019

Bibi Graetz Testamatta 2019 is a Tuscan red built around the clarity of Sangiovese. Released as Toscana IGT Rosso, it is the twentieth vintage of Testamatta and is made entirely from Sangiovese grown in five estate vineyards: Vincigliata, Londa, Lamole, Montefili and Siena.

The strength of this wine lies in the way it brings together several parts of Tuscany. The grapes come from old vines, up to around 80 years of age, rooted in stony hillside soils at varying altitudes. Lamole and Montefili sit in the heart of Chianti Classico, while the other vineyards add fruit from near Florence, Londa and Siena. The aim is not heaviness, but purity, minerality and a transparent expression of the grape.

The 2019 growing season was stable, with enough warmth and rain, followed by lower minimum temperatures before harvest that supported slow, complete ripening. Picking was carried out by hand from 21 September to 8 October, with vineyard parcels harvested in multiple passes where needed. Fermentation took place with native yeasts, followed by 20 months of ageing in old barriques and larger casks.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see Testamatta 2019 as a refined and structured Tuscan red with real depth behind its precision. Its strong international critical recognition, including high scores from James Suckling, Decanter and Falstaff, reflects the attention this vintage has received. Only the last bottles of this popular wine remain.

About BIBI GRAETZ

Bibi Graetz is a winery from Tuscany, Italy, that has stood out since its founding in the early 2000s for its creative, unconventional approach to winemaking. The brand is named after its founder, Bibi Graetz, an artist of Norwegian and Swiss descent who fully committed himself to wine after a career in painting. From his residence and business in Fiesole, near Florence, Graetz mainly works with old vines of Sangiovese, Colorino and Canaiolo, grapes deeply rooted in the Tuscan wine tradition. His vineyards benefit from a cooler location, which influences the expression of the grapes. Graetz is known for a non-traditional approach: he often works with indigenous varieties, minimal intervention, and the use of both cement and wooden vats in the vinification process. The range includes both accessible wines and several cuvées that have attracted international attention. The labels usually feature colorful art designed by Graetz himself. Through the combination of artistic vision, attention to terroir, and the use of old vines, the brand has managed to distinguish itself in the broad Tuscan wine landscape.
