Flavour notes
The wine shows a pale straw colour with a bright lemon-tinted rim. Aromatically, it leans into citrus and white-to-yellow fruit: lemon curd, mandarin, grapefruit, nashi pear, nectarine, melon and white peach, with softer notes of shortbread, custard and vanilla pastry.On the palate it has a rounded, full mid-palate, with yoghurt-like creaminess and a glycerol texture balanced by clear natural acidity. Spice and nutty detail add further depth, bringing cardamom, caraway, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground almond and marzipan-like tones.
The finish is juicy, mineral and persistent, with chalky texture, smoke, flint and wet river-stone impressions giving the wine its final line of tension.

Penfolds Reserve A Chardonnay 2018 is a dry white wine from Adelaide Hills in South Australia, made from Chardonnay and shaped in a clearly considered, contemporary style. Penfolds describes Reserve Bin A as a single-region Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, and the 2018 vintage shows that idea through precision, texture and a measured use of French oak.The grapes were hand-picked in small bins and whole-bunch pressed. Part of the juice went straight from the press into French barriques, with each new and used 225-litre barrel acting as its own fermentation vessel. Spontaneous fermentation, maturation on solids, careful periodic bâtonnage and full natural malolactic fermentation all play a role in the wine's creamy depth and mineral line.
Eight months in French oak barriques gave the wine structure rather than just flavour. The oak regime combined 40% new French oak with one-year-old and older barriques, so the impression is layered: citrus and white fruit, gentle spice, nutty detail and a flinty edge.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Chardonnay we like to explain rather than simply place on the shelf. It sits comfortably among serious, oak-fermented white wines with ageing potential, and Penfolds lists a drinking window from 2021 to 2035 for this vintage. With the last bottles now available, it is a wine to open with some attention. Scores reaching 96 points underline the strong reputation of this particular release.
