Flavour notes

Chateau Marsau 2018 shows a ripe Merlot expression built around red and dark fruit: cherry, dark cherry, cassis, black raspberry, plum and black fruit. The aromatic detail then moves into red rose, violet, graphite, pencil shavings, liquorice, cacao, black olive, lightly toasted coffee bean, wild sage and lavender.

On the palate it is described as medium-full to full-bodied, with a textured opening, juicy feel and a rounded mid-palate. The tannins are plentiful but fine, with a powdery firmness, while the finish remains long and fragrant. Serving it around 16 to 18 °C fits the style well.

Product info about Chateau Marsau 2018 Magnum (1,5l)

Chateau Marsau 2018 Magnum is a red Bordeaux from Côtes de Francs, made entirely from Merlot. In the 1.5 litre magnum format, it has the kind of table presence that suits a generous meal or a bottle opened with people who will take their time with it.

The 2018 vintage has a particularly interesting background at Château Marsau. The estate sits on a high plateau with a strongly clay-based terroir, a setting where Merlot is central. That year was difficult, with heavy mildew pressure and very low yields, so the wine comes across as a concentrated, ripe expression with dark and red fruit, floral detail, spice, mineral accents and a firm yet fine tannic frame.

This was also the vintage that marked the beginning of the move towards organic farming. The wine is described as fermented with native yeasts and without sulphur addition during vinification. Oak ageing is present in the story, but the tasting descriptions point more towards subtle cacao, coffee, spice and graphite than overtly sweet oak.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of magnum that stands out for its combination of serious right-bank Merlot character, limited production and a distinctive vintage identity. The collaboration with designer Ronan Bouroullec adds another layer, with three label designs inspired by clay, plant life and fruit, all for the same wine rather than separate cuvées.

About CH MARSAU

Château Marsau is a wine estate from France, located in the Bordeaux region, specifically in the northern part of the Côtes de Francs, which has been officially known as Francs Côtes de Bordeaux since 2016. The estate focuses primarily on red wines made from Merlot, the grape that is characteristic for many Bordeaux wines from this area. The vineyard of Château Marsau covers about 12 hectares and is managed with attention to the terroir, with soils that mainly consist of clay, which contributes to the characteristic style of the wines: smooth, full of fruit and generally relatively accessible in their youth. Originally taken over by the Chanfreau family in the 1990s and now under the leadership of Eacute;tienne Mouty, the wines of Château Marsau have developed in recent decades into representative examples of their appellation. The limited annual production and a clear focus on quality make the wines of this estate interesting for both lovers of classic Bordeaux and people looking for something less well-known than the big names from the region.
