Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano 2018 is a red wine from Piedmont, made entirely from nebbiolo within the Barolo DOCG appellation. In this 37.5 cl half bottle, it offers the character of Barolo in a smaller and very useful format, especially when a full bottle is more than you need.Tortoniano refers to ancient Tortonian soils: grey calcareous and tuffaceous marl of marine sedimentary origin. That origin is central to the identity of the wine. The grapes were harvested by hand, and the 2018 vintage required careful vineyard work, including thinning a substantial part of the crop to support healthy ripening.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel, followed by extended maturation in medium and large wooden casks and further bottle ageing. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this Tortoniano as a Barolo with a clear sense of place, a traditional nebbiolo structure and a vintage that the available tasting notes describe as already approachable. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte.
