Flavour notes

The colour is described as ruby red to garnet red, with bright reflections. Aromatically, it brings together small red fruits, darker ripe fruit, truffle, leather, sweet tobacco and liquorice. Some tasting notes also mention vanilla and earthy tones, while Wine Enthusiast refers to raspberry jam and blood orange.

On the palate, the wine is rich and enveloping, with a full structure and polished, silky tannins. A savoury undertone gives depth to the ripe fruit, while liquorice, tobacco, leather and earthier notes carry through into the finish.

Product info about Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi 2017

Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi 2017 is a dry red Barolo DOCG from Piedmont, made entirely from nebbiolo and rooted in one of the most closely identified sites of the appellation: Cannubi, in the commune of Barolo. Michele Chiarlo describes Cannubi as a historic cru recognised since 1752, and the estate has owned a parcel in its historic heart since 1989. That gives this wine a strong sense of place rather than simply a broad Barolo identity.

The fruit comes from around one hectare of vineyard, with vines planted between 1958 and 1990. The site sits at about 240 metres, facing south to south-west, on calcareous marl soils with sand, iron and magnesium. After hand harvesting, the wine was vinified in large oak vats, with 20 days of fermentation and maceration, then aged for at least three years, including two years in medium-sized oak casks.

The 2017 vintage was shaped by a long summer and very little rainfall. In the vineyard, Michele Chiarlo worked to preserve freshness in the grapes, avoiding direct sun exposure on the bunches and harvesting around ten days earlier than usual. It is a useful detail, because it frames the wine as a warm-vintage Barolo where structure, ripeness and retained freshness all matter.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would introduce as a Barolo with a clear vineyard identity and a vintage story behind it. Wine Enthusiast awarded this exact wine 94 points and indicated a drinking window from 2024 to 2032, suggesting a wine that can be approached with patience as well as interest today. More information about the estate can be found at https://www.michelechiarlo.it/

About MICHELE CHIARLO

Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte. The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide. Nowadays, the company is still led by the Chiarlo family, with the next generation actively involved in the management and preservation of the family tradition.
