Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco Asili 2019 in magnum is a wine with a strong sense of place. It comes from the Asili vineyard in the commune of Barbaresco, within the Barbaresco DOCG, and is made entirely from nebbiolo. The fruit is sourced from around one hectare of vines planted in 1990 on blue-grey calcareous marl with a small amount of clay.There is a clear focus on selection and patience here. The grapes are hand-harvested, after summer thinning that leaves only a limited number of bunches on each vine. Fermentation and skin contact take 17 to 18 days in large oak vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in cask. The wine then matures for at least two years, including 18 months in oak casks, before further bottle ageing.
The producer describes 2019 as a classic vintage, with lower yields and high-quality grapes. That suits the Asili identity particularly well: aromatic intensity, structure and refined tannins all have room to show themselves. In magnum, the wine gains an added sense of occasion, especially at the table with dishes such as porcini risotto, roast pork or rack of lamb.

Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte.
