Michele Chiarlo Cipressi Nizza 2019 Magnum is a red wine from Piedmont, produced in the Nizza DOCG appellation from 100% barbera. In the 1.5 litre magnum format it feels immediately well suited to the table, while remaining very clearly rooted in Castelnuovo Calcea, within the Nizza area of Asti.The fruit comes from vineyards connected with Tenuta La Court, an estate that plays an important role in Michele Chiarlo's Nizza DOCG wines. The vines average around twenty years of age and grow on soils of Asti sand over Sant'Agata marl, with clay, limestone, silt and sand. That background helps place the wine: Barbera fruit, but with structure, freshness and a sense of depth.
For 2019, the producer describes a low-yielding but high-quality vintage. Autumn and winter brought useful water reserves, followed by warm, dry conditions and then a final period before harvest marked by mild days and cool nights. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, with ageing for at least 18 months, including 12 months in large oak casks, before further bottle maturation.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Italian red we like to present when someone wants more than simple fruit: a Nizza Barbera with polished tannins, lively acidity and enough substance for charcuterie, pasta with ragù, risotto, fillet, guinea fowl or semi-aged goat's cheese. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes.
