Michele Chiarlo La Court Nizza Riserva 2019 is a Piedmontese Barbera from Nizza DOCG, rooted in one clearly defined place: the La Court vineyard in Castelnuovo Calcea. Presented here in a 3-litre double magnum, it has the kind of format that immediately brings a sense of occasion to the table or to the cellar.La Court is part of Michele Chiarlo's 'Icon crus', wines made only in selected vintages and in limited quantities. The 3-hectare vineyard was planted in 1976 on calcareous clay-marl soils with sand and silt, at around 240 metres altitude. Manual harvesting, low yields and careful vineyard work all support the same idea: a Barbera with depth, structure and a strong sense of origin.
The wine spends 30 months maturing in total, with around one year in wood split between barriques and large oak casks, followed by 18 months in bottle. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this double magnum stands out as a serious Italian red for those moments when provenance, ageing potential and generosity of format all matter.
The 2019 vintage is described by the producer as one with cellaring potential and it has also received recognition from several wine critics. With the final bottles available, this is a release to approach with the attention a limited single-vineyard Riserva deserves.

Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte. The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide.
