Michele Chiarlo La Court Nizza Riserva 2019 Magnum is a red wine from Piemonte with a very clear sense of origin: Barbera from the La Court vineyard in Castelnuovo Calcea, within Nizza DOCG Riserva. In this 1.5 litre magnum format it feels especially suited to the table, because this is a wine built around vineyard identity, vintage character and patient maturation.La Court is an important cru for Michele Chiarlo. The vines used for this cuvée date back to 1976 and grow on calcareous clay-marl soils of marine sedimentary origin, with limestone, sand and micro-elements such as magnesium. The grapes are harvested by hand, with yields restricted through cluster thinning at the end of summer. Those details matter because they point to a Barbera intended to express a specific site rather than simply a grape variety.
The 2019 vintage is described by the producer as classic, with fewer grapes but healthy, ripe fruit. Fermentation and skin contact take place in oak vats, followed by long maturation including wood ageing and bottle ageing, over a total period of around two and a half years. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte.
