La Closerie de Camensac 2020 is the second wine of Château de Camensac, a Saint-Laurent-Médoc estate associated with the 1855 classification as a fifth growth. Rather than feeling like a simplified version of the grand vin, it has its own role: a dedicated selection of parcels and lots assembled specifically for La Closerie.For the 2020 vintage, the blend is 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon. That gives merlot a stronger voice, while the deep gravel soils and Haut-Médoc origin keep the wine firmly rooted in Bordeaux structure. The wine was made with selective harvesting and sorting, followed by around 12 months in French oak barriques, with only a modest share of new oak.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a classic but not overdone Haut-Médoc: structured, fresh and composed rather than heavy. Recognition such as one star in Guide Hachette des Vins 2024 and 91/100 from James Suckling fits that impression. Château de Camensac is a historic winery from the Bordeaux region in France, specifically located in the appellation Haut-Médoc. The castle and vineyards have a long tradition dating back to the 18th century, but the estate gained international fame when it was included in the famous 1855 classification of the Grand Cru Classés, where it received the status of Cinquième Cru (Fifth Group). The vineyards of Château de Camensac cover about 75 hectares, featuring mainly cabernet sauvignon and merlot as grape varieties, and the viticulture takes place on typical gravel soils that are characteristic for the region. The style of the wines is known for their freshness, structure and aging potential, contemporary with a classic Bordeaux signature. Château de Camensac is nowadays managed by the Merlaut family, who work together with a dedicated team of winemakers. Thanks to investments and a focus on quality, both the wines and the wine estate are popular among lovers of classic Bordeaux wines.
