Flavour notes

The aromatic profile moves through ripe red and black fruit, with blackcurrant, dark berries, pomegranate and plum-like fruit clearly present. Balsamic notes, liquorice, chocolate, cacao, espresso and dried mint add depth, while earthier tones of wet soil, mushroom and bark bring a more savoury side.

On the palate it is full-bodied, with firm yet polished tannins and fresh acidity supporting the ripe fruit. French oak shows through toast, coffee, chocolate and spice, but the wood is described as integrated. The finish is long, carrying dark fruit, graphite-like minerality, espresso and tea-like nuances.

Product info about Numanthia 2017

Numanthia 2017 is a full-blooded red wine from Toro, made entirely from Tinta de Toro, the local Tempranillo variant of this part of Castilla y León. Rather than expressing one single vineyard, it brings together fruit from more than 100 small parcels. That mosaic is central to the identity of the wine: Numanthia is the estate's signature cuvée, built as a broad expression of Toro's old vines and varied terroirs near the Duero.

The vineyard material is a major part of the story. The grapes come from old, often ungrafted and unirrigated vines, with sources referring to vineyards averaging around 50 years of age and some vines reaching roughly 120 years. The 2017 vintage required careful selection after frost reduced the crop, followed by a warm, dry growing season that brought ripe fruit. In the cellar, extraction was kept gentler to moderate the wine's structure.

Maturation took place over 18 months in French oak barrels of 225 and 400 litres, 60% of them new. The result sits firmly in the Toro tradition: concentrated, structured and fruit-rich, yet described with more focus and balance than extraction alone. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see Numanthia 2017 as a Spanish red with real presence at the table, particularly alongside meat dishes, stews, roasted meats, charcuterie and cheeses.

The vintage also received strong critical recognition, including 96 points from James Suckling, 93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and 94 points cited by Guía Peñín. More important than the numbers is the impression they point to: ripe fruit, polished power, freshness and the capacity for further bottle development.

About NUMANTHIA

Numanthia is a Spanish wine brand originating from the Toro region in the northwest of Spain. The wine is named after the ancient Celtiberian village of Numancia (Numantia), known for its historic resistance against Roman besiegers, which symbolizes the strength and longevity of the old vines with which the wine is made. Numanthia mainly focuses on wines from the grape variety Tinta de Toro, a local type of Tempranillo that in this area is known for its deep color, powerful structure, and intense aroma's. The brand's vineyards are located at high altitude in the harsh climate of Zamora, where the vines are often pre-phylloxera, thus very old and not grænted. As a result, they produce a low yield but concentrated, characterful wines. Numanthia was founded in 1998 and has since managed to establish itself internationally through its rich, complex, and long-lived wines that are typical for the area. Since 2008, the brand has been part of the LVMH group. Production happens with much attention to tradition and terroir, which is well reflected in the limited but distinctive range, including the labels Numanthia and Termanthia, both showing a loyalty to the unique character of the region.
