The 2020 blend is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine comes from the estate's vineyards in Pauillac, including the Pontet-Canet plateau, where Garonne gravel from the Günz period lies over limestone. That poor, well-draining soil is an important part of the wine's identity, particularly for Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in the grand vin.

The 2020 vintage was demanding in the vineyard, with a very mild winter, early budbreak, heavy rainfall pressure in May and June, and then clearer conditions towards harvest. Château Pontet-Canet works organically and biodynamically, using preparations, infusions and decoctions in the vineyard. Ageing combines French oak barrels, one-year-old casks and concrete amphorae, with the amphorae helping to preserve the expression of grape and terroir.

This is a structured red Bordeaux with dark fruit, depth and a clear Pauillac identity. The magnum format gives the bottle extra presence, whether for cellaring or serving at a special table. In the glass, Château Pontet-Canet 2020 shows a deep colour with purple reflections. The nose centres on dark fruit: blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, with floral notes of peony, violet and lilac. Liquorice, mint, menthol, cedar, graphite and herbal accents add further definition.

The palate is generous, full and creamy, with a juicy, satin-like texture. The tannins are clearly present and give the wine its Pauillac structure, supported by freshness and dark fruit. The finish carries black fruit, smoke, mint, cedar and touches of cacao or dark chocolate.
