Haut Bailly II 2020 is the second wine of Château Haut-Bailly in Pessac-Léognan, offered here in a 1.5 litre magnum. It comes from the same estate as the grand vin, but is blended from selected lots that suit the second wine's style: fresh, fruit-driven and elegant in structure.The 2020 vintage gives this wine notable substance. A wet winter and spring were followed by a warmer than normal, exceptionally dry summer, and the grapes were described at harvest as ripe, fruity, sugar-rich and concentrated. The blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Sauvignon captures that contrast well, with Merlot bringing roundness and dark fruit while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes shape and firmness.
There is careful work behind the bottle. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, with manual harvesting and sorting, destemming and further selection. Haut Bailly II is generally matured for 14 to 16 months in fine-grained French oak barrels, with around 30% new oak. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a serious red Bordeaux for drinkers who appreciate the class of Pessac-Léognan but want a wine that is a little more approachable than the estate's grand vin.

About CH HAUT BAILLY
Château Haut-Bailly is a well-known name from the French Bordeaux region and is located in the heart of Pessac-Lëognan, just south of the city of Bordeaux. The estate has a history dating back to the 16th century and has long been known for producing red wines mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The château owns around 30 hectares of vineyards on a unique sandy gravel soil, which contributes to the distinctive elegance and structure of the wines. Since 1998, Château Haut-Bailly has been owned by the Wilmers family; recently, ownership has passed on to their descendants, with input from an international team. The winery is known for a refined, balanced style, where power and finesse meet, which is typically appreciated by international wine enthusiasts and critics. In addition, much attention is given to detail and sustainability on the estate, where modern insights are combined with respect for tradition.
