Marquis de Calon Ségur 2020 is the second wine of Château Calon Ségur in Saint-Estèphe, yet it is treated as a wine with its own identity. The parcels are selected separately from the beginning, giving this Bordeaux a distinct expression of the Calon terroir in the northern Médoc.The 2020 blend brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. That gives it a slightly different stance from the grand vin, which is generally more Cabernet-led. The warm, dry growing season and relatively low yield show through in the wine's ripe concentration, while the Saint-Estèphe structure remains very much present.
Careful hand harvesting, sorting in the vineyard and after destemming, temperature-controlled stainless steel vinification and around 17 months in French oak barrels, about 30% of them new, all point to a seriously made wine. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a strong choice for Bordeaux drinkers who enjoy depth and structure, but appreciate the rounder and more approachable side shown by this 2020 release.
It sits comfortably alongside red meat, grilled dishes, lamb, game, poultry and mature hard cheeses. When opened young, some aeration can help the tannins and fruit unfold; there is also enough structure here for further cellar development.

About CH CALON SEGUR
Château Calon Sëgur is a historic winery from the French Bordeaux region and belongs to the renowned appellation Saint-Estèphe in the Médoc. The estate has a rich history dating back to the 12th century, with the name Calon referring to an old type of boat used to transport wood along the river. The current castle and wine estate became especially famous under the Sëgur family, who were in charge in the 18th century and were also responsible for other major Bordeaux names. Château Calon Sëgur was classified as Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, meaning that since then it has been recognized as one of the third growths of the region. The vineyards cover approximately 55 hectares, with mainly the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines of Calon Sëgur are known for their combination of power and elegance, with a strong character typical of Saint-Estèphe, but with remarkable finesse and aging potential. Today, the château is still highly regarded among Bordeaux enthusiasts and, besides the Grand Vin, also offers a second wine, Le Marquis de Calon Sëgur.
