Pagodes de Cos 2020 in magnum is the second red wine of Château Cos d'Estournel in Saint-Estèphe, yet it has a clear identity of its own. It comes from selected plots within the Cos d'Estournel estate and is intended as a distinct interpretation of that terroir rather than a simple lesser version of the grand vin.The 2020 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding to the composition. Its maturation included a measured proportion of new barriques, enough to frame the wine without making oak the main story. The château's gravity-fed cellar also underlines the same approach: handling the fruit gently and keeping the tannins as refined as possible.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this magnum stands out as a serious Saint-Estèphe in a generous 1.5-litre format. It is a bottle made for a shared table, and under good cellar conditions a magnum can develop more gradually than a standard bottle. As these are the last bottles, it is the kind of Bordeaux we prefer to introduce with a little context rather than simply place on the shelf.
For young vintages such as 2020, Château Cos d'Estournel recommends decanting for around one hour and serving between 15 and 16 °C. Its dark fruit, spice and present tannins make it a natural match for beef, lamb, game, poultry or mature hard cheeses.

Château Cos d'Estournel is a renowned winery from the French Bordeaux region, specifically located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Médoc. The estate was founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, who dedicated himself to producing complex and characterful wines exclusively from his own vineyards. Cos d'Estournel is known as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since the famous 1855 classification, in which it was counted among the top of the region. The winery covers about 100 hectares and has been expanded and modernized during various periods, but the distinctive Asian-inspired architecture and the impressive gatehouse are still iconic. The wine of Château Cos d'Estournel is traditionally characterized by a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented by Merlot and occasionally small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This results in a powerful, structured wine that ages well and develops complexity over the years.
