Blanc de Chasse-Spleen 2021 is a white Bordeaux from Château Chasse-Spleen in Moulis-en-Médoc. That already makes it a wine with a slightly different angle: the Médoc is far better known for red wines, while white crus from this area remain relatively uncommon.The 2021 blend brings together sémillon, sauvignon blanc and muscadelle from the estate's white vineyards. These vines cover 4 hectares on sandy-clay soils, with an average vine age of 25 years. Château Chasse-Spleen first planted white varieties in the 1990s, and Blanc de Chasse-Spleen has been commercially released since 1995.
Fermentation and maturation involve both stainless steel tanks and new barriques. The wine was aged for 9 months, partly on the lees, with 50% new oak. That combination gives the wine more than simple freshness: there is tension, but also volume and a subtle sense of polish. Chasse Spleen is a wine brand originating from the Bordeaux region of France, more specifically from the appellation Moulis-en-Médoc in the wine region Médoc. The estate has existed since the 19th century and is especially known among wine lovers for its red wines, which are often traditionally composed with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and sometimes a small amount of Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc. The name of the winery, which can be freely translated as drive away the gloom, is reportedly a reference to the poet Charles Baudelaire and his most famous work Les Fleurs du mal, but there are different stories about this. Château Chasse Spleen enjoys a solid reputation within the Moulis-en-Médoc and is not on the official 1855 classification of Bordeaux, but is often mentioned in the same breath by many experts alongside the better crus bourgeois exceptionnels from the region. The wines are known for their classic Bordeaux style with a relatively firm structure, fresh acidity, and a clear presence of fruit and sometimes a distinctive earthy undertone.
