Quinta da Fonte Souto Vinha do Souto Red 2019 is the flagship red cuvée from Quinta da Fonte Souto, Symington Family Estates' property in Portalegre, Alto Alentejo. Its name comes from the soutos, the chestnut groves near the vineyards that supply the grapes. That detail says a lot: this is a wine rooted in a specific estate and landscape rather than a broad regional style.The 2019 blend is built from Syrah and Alicante Bouschet, selected from estate parcels on schist and granite soils in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. At around 490 to 550 metres above sea level, with marked day-night temperature differences, the vineyards give the wine freshness alongside concentration. At Drankenshop Broekmans, that is what makes this bottle especially interesting: it has the depth expected from a serious Alentejo red, yet it comes from a cooler setting with real tension.
The grapes were hand-harvested, manually sorted and vinified in separate lots. Fruit from the best parcels was handled in smaller fermentation vessels, with manual cap work and post-fermentation maceration to build structure and ageing potential. Maturation took place in 400-litre French oak barrels, partly new and partly second-year oak.
The 2019 vintage in Portalegre was described as dry yet relatively mild, with low yields and good phenolic ripeness. Recognition from Decanter with 94 points and Wine Enthusiast with 92 points fits the profile of a concentrated, carefully made red wine that can still reward patience.
