Weingut Robert Weil Monte Nostrum 2022 is a dry white Riesling from the Rheingau, grown in the highest and coolest parcels of the Kiedrich hillside vineyards. The name refers to this elevated setting and to the historic surroundings of the former castellum nostrum near Scharfenstein castle. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a wine that speaks very clearly of place: focused, cool-toned and mineral rather than broad or fruit-driven.The grapes come from poor, stony soils with a strong presence of phyllite slate, between Turmberg and Gräfenberg and close to the forest edge. Sun exposure, ventilation and day-night temperature differences all play their part here. The fruit was selectively hand-harvested, followed by a short period of skin contact, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation and maturation in large Doppelstück casks made from native oak.
Robert Weil's 2022 vintage was marked by heat, sunshine and little summer rain, yet Monte Nostrum keeps a firm line of freshness. That tension between concentration and mineral precision is the central appeal of the wine. The strong critical recognition for this vintage, including 99/100 from James Suckling and 96/100 from The Wine Advocate, fits the impression of a serious, structured dry Riesling with real length.
Serve it at around 8 to 12 °C. One to two hours in a carafe can help its stony, saline character open up. It has the style to accompany fish, shellfish, sushi, fresh goat's cheese, mushroom dishes and refined vegetarian cooking.
