Domaine Maurice et Anne-Marie Chapuis Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru 2020 is a red Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune, made from pinot noir in the Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru appellation. In the Burgundy selection at Drankenshop Broekmans, it stands out as a wine for drinkers who appreciate origin, structure and freshness rather than sheer weight.

The wine is a blend of three premier cru sites: Les Vercots, Les Guîrets and Les Valozières. That gives it several facets of Aloxe-Corton, from the southern side of the village on brown soils with limestone debris to the stonier northern parcel of Les Valozières, which borders Corton Grand Cru Les Bressandes. For this 2020 release, the surface is listed at around 1.5 hectares, with vines averaging about 45 years old.

Although 2020 was a warm vintage, with harvest at Chapuis taking place early between 23 and 29 August, the wine is noted for keeping plenty of freshness and drive. The grapes were 85% destemmed, with 15% whole clusters included in the fermentation, and the wine was bottled unfiltered. Domaine Chapuis follows a traditional approach, with manual harvesting, concrete vats, pigeage and remontage, followed by ageing in French oak with a deliberately low proportion of new wood to keep the fruit and site expression clear.

Domaine Chapuis is a family estate in Aloxe-Corton with about 11 hectares of vineyard around the Corton hill. Pierre and Claire Chapuis represent the sixth generation, working alongside Maurice and Anne-Marie. The 2020 has attracted strong critical attention, including high ratings from Decanter and Jane Anson, but what makes it most compelling is the way it captures a ripe year without losing the tension and freshness expected from fine red Burgundy.

This Aloxe-Corton comes across as a medium-bodied red Burgundy with a clearly fresh line. The fruit moves from strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant toward darker notes of black raspberry and kirsch, while violet and floral nuances add a more refined aromatic layer.

On the palate it is dry, lively and well defined, with mouth-watering acidity carrying the ripeness of the 2020 vintage. Anise, dark chocolate, dried leaf and a subtle sandalwood note bring extra depth. The tannins are fine-grained to lightly chalky, giving a powdery texture and a long, fresh finish.
