Alberelli di Giodo Nerello Mascalese 2021 is a Sicilian red wine with a clear Etna identity. Giodo is Carlo Ferrini's Sicilian project, and this Terre Siciliane IGT comes from the northern slope of the volcano. Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese and sourced from vines of around 50 to 80 years old, it is less about weight and more about precision, origin and volcanic tension.

The name Alberelli refers to the bush-trained vines. They grow between 560 and 850 metres above sea level, on black pumice volcanic soils, in a landscape also marked by olive and fruit trees. Those details are not decorative; they explain much of the wine's personality, from its lively acidity and defined structure to its mineral undertone.

In the cellar, the approach keeps that sense of place intact. The wine sees around twenty days of skin contact, fermentation in stainless steel, and about eighteen months of maturation in small and large wooden casks and cocciopesto amphora, followed by time in cement and twelve months in bottle. The oak does not define the wine; it frames the Nerello Mascalese while leaving room for fruit, herbs and the Etna character.

With roughly 8,000 bottles produced and only the last bottles available, the 2021 has an added sense of scarcity. Strong international recognition, including high scores from Wine Advocate and James Suckling, underlines its reputation, but the real interest lies in its combination of red fruit, fine tannins and unmistakable volcanic detail.

In the glass, the wine sits between ruby and pale ruby, with a bright rim. Aromatically it brings together plum, cassis, wild berries, raspberry, redcurrant and cherry, followed by floral notes of rose, violet, lavender and mountain flowers.

The volcanic side becomes more evident with impressions of iron, pumice, lava stone, graphite and crushed stone. Dried herbs, thyme, oregano, lemon balm, mint, sage and orange peel add detail, with a light smoky touch in the background.

The palate is dry, precise and focused, medium-bodied to occasionally a little fuller on the attack. Lively acidity and fine, powdery tannins give shape, while a saline-mineral undertone carries the long finish.
