Valandraud Blanc 2021 is a dry white Bordeaux from Château Valandraud, the Saint-Émilion estate of Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud. It should be seen in its own right rather than as a pale counterpart to the red wine: this is a Bordeaux white built from sauvignon gris, sauvignon blanc and sémillon.Its scale is part of the attraction. The fruit comes from a small white vineyard of around 1.5 hectares near Château Valandraud, with roughly 20-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils. Production of the 2021 vintage is described as limited, with references around 3,500 bottles or 250 cases. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we value wines like this because they show a more specialised side of Bordeaux, away from the obvious labels and large-volume whites.
The 2021 vintage brought a cooler growing season, allowing ripeness to sit alongside freshness. Grapes were hand-harvested in several passes, followed by cold storage, a long pressing and maturation on fine lees. Ageing in new barriques and jars adds texture and discreet depth, while the wine keeps its line of citrus, white fruit and mineral tension.
This is a white Bordeaux with enough structure for the table. The notes supplied with the wine point towards grilled lobster, turbot and blanquette de veau, dishes where its freshness, satiny texture and subtle richness can work naturally together.

About VALANDRAUD
Valandraud is a wine brand from Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, that was founded in 1989 by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud. What started as a relatively modest vineyard of about 0.6 hectare grew into a remarkable phenomenon in the world of Bordeaux wines. Valandraud is often associated with the so-called 'garagistes' movement: small producers who, with great care and craftsmanship, create distinctive and expressive wines, often outside traditional rules. The estate is known for its limited production and intensive selection, with emphasis on terroir and manual vinification. In the meantime, the vineyard covers a significantly larger area, spread over various plots in Saint-Émilion. The wines of Valandraud are usually composed mainly of Merlot, supplemented with variable amounts of Cabernet Franc and sometimes other grape varieties. The style is often regarded as rich, full-bodied and concentrated, with both the complexity and power of the Bordeaux region well represented. In 2012, Chateau Valandraud was officially classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé, thereby gaining worldwide recognition as one of the leading producers from Saint-Émilion.
