Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2021 is the grand vin of this Pauillac estate, classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Médoc classification. What makes this vintage stand out is the very high share of Cabernet Sauvignon: 90%, with 10% Merlot. For this château, that is notably Cabernet-driven, giving the wine a clear Left Bank identity built around dark fruit, structure, graphite, cedar and spice.The 2021 growing season was demanding, with frost, coulure, cool conditions and strong mildew pressure, followed by a more favourable September. Yields were lower than usual, so selection plays an important role in the final wine. The grapes come from organically and biodynamically managed vineyards, and the château describes the wine as produced from Demeter grapes.
Its Pauillac character is also tied to the soils. Around the estate, the vineyard combines gravel with clay and limestone, while the Bages plateau brings deep gravel. The producer links the limestone component to the wine's freshness and mineral expression.
In the cellar, the work was carried out parcel by parcel, with a 24-day maceration and 16 months of ageing. Part of the wine matured in new oak, part in one-year-old barrels and part in TAVA amphorae. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Pauillac with a strong sense of place and vintage: firm, fresh, structured and still youthful. With the last bottles now available, it is also becoming increasingly limited.
Serve at 16 to 18 °C and allow 1 to 2 hours of decanting while young. The château indicates that the wine can be enjoyed from 2026, with 2031 mentioned as a peak moment.
