Flavour notes
Château Montviel 2021 shows its merlot-driven character clearly, with ripe dark fruit, blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry. There are also berry notes, floral hints, tobacco, bay leaf, mint, liquorice and occasional orange peel. The oak influence is present but not heavy, adding depth alongside a light smoky touch. On the palate it is medium to full in body, with juicy fruit and a soft, supple texture. The tannins are noticeable yet fine-grained, giving structure without making the wine feel severe. The finish stays fruit-led and fresh, with savoury spice notes lingering gently.

Product info about Chateau Montviel 2021 Magnum (1,5l)
Château Montviel 2021 Magnum is a red Pomerol from Bordeaux, made from 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. In the 1.5 litre magnum format, it immediately feels like a wine for the table: a bottle with presence, suited to a generous meal or a moment where one bottle needs to carry the occasion.Montviel works with parcels across the Pomerol appellation, including clay-gravel and fine gravel soils. The estate's first wine is selected from its best parcels, while a significant part of production goes into the second wine, La Rose Montviel. That gives this cuvée a clear position within the estate: the wine where Montviel brings together its strongest selection of fruit.
After Catherine Péré-Vergé acquired the château in 1985, the estate saw cellar renovations and vineyard restructuring. A further renewal of the cellar equipment in 2019 introduced temperature-controlled concrete vats and a system for cooling grapes before fermentation, supporting an approach focused on fruit integrity and avoiding over-extraction.
The 2021 vintage has been described as one where the more delicate nature of the year moderates Montviel's usually generous style. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we would place this magnum with Pomerol drinkers who enjoy dark fruit, structure and oak maturation, but who also value freshness and a finer touch. Guide Hachette awarded the wine 1 star and James Suckling rated it 91 points; these are also the last magnums, making it a thoughtful bottle to follow in the cellar or open around a well-chosen dinner.
