Château Calon Ségur 2021 Magnum is the grand vin of Château Calon Ségur in Saint-Estèphe, Médoc. The 1.5-litre bottle is not a separate cuvée, but the estate's main wine in magnum format: a dry red Bordeaux from a property classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855.The château describes 2021 as a classically styled Bordeaux vintage, marked by moderate alcohol, clear freshness and elegant tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc set the tone of the blend, supported by Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. That emphasis fits the Calon Ségur vineyard, where deep gravel over mainly clay soils helps shape the structure and Cabernet-driven identity of the wine.
There is a very deliberate winemaking approach behind this release. The grapes were harvested and sorted by hand after a growing season that required careful vineyard work. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by around 20 months of ageing in 100% new oak barriques. About CH CALON SEGUR
Château Calon Sëgur is a historic winery from the French Bordeaux region and belongs to the renowned appellation Saint-Estèphe in the Médoc. The estate has a rich history dating back to the 12th century, with the name Calon referring to an old type of boat used to transport wood along the river. The current castle and wine estate became especially famous under the Sëgur family, who were in charge in the 18th century and were also responsible for other major Bordeaux names. Château Calon Sëgur was classified as Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, meaning that since then it has been recognized as one of the third growths of the region. The vineyards cover approximately 55 hectares, with mainly the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines of Calon Sëgur are known for their combination of power and elegance, with a strong character typical of Saint-Estèphe, but with remarkable finesse and aging potential. Today, the château is still highly regarded among Bordeaux enthusiasts and, besides the Grand Vin, also offers a second wine, Le Marquis de Calon Sëgur.
