Flavour notes

Yuzu is immediately at the centre, joined by citrus zest, lemon, mandarin and grapefruit. The impression is sweet and fresh at the same time, with a sorbet-like quality and a subtle note reminiscent of sour lemon sweets.

The Junmai sake adds a gentle grain or rice nuance underneath. On the palate it stays smooth and fruit-driven, with lively acidity, restrained sweetness and a citrusy, lightly tart, medium-length finish.

Product info about Kiyoko Yuzu Infused Aperitif

Kiyoko Yuzu Infused Aperitif is a Japanese aperitif made by combining pure yuzu juice with Junmai sake. Rather than a classic grape wine, it is a citrus-led aperitif in which the bright character of yuzu is carried by a fresh sake base.

The drink is associated with the Kansai region on Honshu. Its yuzu comes from mountainous areas in southern Japan along the Pacific, where sunlight and temperature differences are described as favourable for cultivation. The fruit is hand-picked and pressed directly after harvest to preserve freshness. The juice is pure, not made from concentrate, and no artificial aromas are mentioned.

The Junmai sake brings its own role to the blend, made with Gohyakumangoku rice and Miyamizu water from Mount Rokko. Kiyoko's toji, the master brewer, balances that sake with the pure yuzu juice. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see Kiyoko as a refined, modern aperitif: 10% alcohol, distinctly citrus-driven, and best enjoyed well chilled, neat, over ice or as a bright accent in a Spritz.

About KIYOKO

Kiyoko is a Japanese wine producer that responds to the growing international interest in Japanese wines. Japan, due to its unique climate and geography, faces its own challenges and opportunities as a wine country. Local grape varietals such as Koshu play a central role in Japanese wine production and contribute to the fresh, subtle character for which many Japanese wines are known. Kiyoko focuses on this tradition and typically uses local grapes from Japanese wine regions, such as Yamanashi, where the climate is favorable for certain white grape varieties. The range largely consists of light, elegant wines that suit the subtlety of Japanese cuisine. Influences from both modern techniques and traditional vinification methods come together in Kiyoko's offerings. Despite a relatively modest presence on the world market, Japanese wines, including those from the Kiyoko brand, are increasingly finding their place in the offerings of specialized wine merchants. These wines are loved for their purity, soft character, and fine balance, and can be interesting for those who want to discover the specific expression of wine from Japan.

"je moet er van leren houden"
By Maarten Cuypers from Bilzen on 01/01/2026
