Château Coutet 2022 is the grand vin of Château Coutet in Barsac, Bordeaux: a sweet white wine from a property classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to explain properly, because its interest lies in the meeting point between richness, precision and the cool, incisive style associated with Coutet.The blend is led by sémillon, supported by sauvignon blanc and a small proportion of muscadelle. The grapes were picked by hand in successive selections from late September to late October. The key botrytised fruit for the grand vin came mainly from the fourth pass through the vineyard, showing the patient selection behind this Barsac.
The 2022 growing season was very hot and dry. Noble rot developed slowly at first, then rain in late September and again in October, followed by warm winds, helped the grapes reach high sugar concentration. Fermentation took place in barrel, followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak.
The wine is sweet, concentrated and generous, yet the available tasting notes consistently point to freshness and tension rather than heaviness. With only the last bottles remaining with us, this vintage is especially worth considering for serving with foie gras, cheeses, spiced world cuisine or fruit- and nut-based desserts, as well as for patient cellaring.
