La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou 2022 is the second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou in Saint-Julien, drawn from the château's own vineyards within the appellation. It sits clearly within the estate's range: below the Grand Vin Château Ducru-Beaucaillou and above Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou.The 2022 vintage is particularly notable for its blend of 66% Merlot Noir, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. That relatively high share of Merlot gives this release its own identity within the cuvée. The fruit comes from Ducru-Beaucaillou's Saint-Julien terroirs, where poor, gravelly soils rich in quartz the beaux cailloux behind the name are central to the estate's sense of place.
A warm, dry growing season produced small, concentrated berries. Fermentation took place in conical wooden vats, followed by 12 months in Bordeaux barrels, 80% of them new French oak. The result is described through dark fruit, fine structure, spice, vanilla, cocoa, graphite and a long mineral thread rather than simple oak weight.
Within the Bordeaux selection at Drankenshop Broekmans, this is a Saint-Julien for drinkers who enjoy the identity of a major château in a wine with its own position and voice. With the final bottles now remaining, the 2022 vintage has become all the more worth noting.
