Domaine de Chevalier 2022 Rouge is the red Grand Vin of the estate in Léognan, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the core of the blend, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. As a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, this is not simply a powerful Bordeaux; it is a wine built around structure, detail and a very clear sense of place.The 2022 vintage was hot and dry, with several heatwaves and a very dry summer. According to the estate, old vines and the cooler terroir helped preserve freshness and balance. That contrast is one of the most compelling aspects of this wine: ripe, concentrated fruit from a generous year, held in check by the graphite-like, mineral character associated with Pessac-Léognan.
Selection was particularly careful, from sorting in the vineyard to hand sorting of the bunches and optical sorting of the berries after destemming. The wine was aged for 18 months in barriques, with 35% new oak. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a serious red Bordeaux with real cellar ambitions rather than a bottle chosen only for early charm.
The vintage also has an extra layer of meaning for Domaine de Chevalier: 2022 marked Olivier Bernard's 40th harvest at the estate, accompanied by a special one-off label. With only the last bottles remaining, it has the feel of a notable Pessac-Léognan from a highly distinctive year.
