Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2022 is a red Pauillac from the Médoc and the grand vin of a 5th Grand Cru Classé estate from the 1855 classification. The wine comes from around 30 hectares of vineyards, with plots near the château on clay-limestone soils and others on deep gravel around the Bages plateau. That origin gives this vintage a clearly Pauillac identity: structured, cabernet-led and shaped by freshness and mineral tension.The blend is 87% cabernet sauvignon and 13% merlot. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with Demeter mentioned for this vintage. In the cellar, vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, followed by 16 months of ageing in a mix of new oak, one-wine barrels, ovoid concrete vats and amphorae. It is a Bordeaux with a classical address, but the work behind it feels very precise and contemporary.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Pauillac we like to present to customers who appreciate structure, origin and ageing potential rather than immediate simplicity. The producer describes the 2022 as fruit-driven, mineral, elegant and exact in its tannins, recommending drinking from 2027, with a peak around 2032. Serving at 16 to 18°C after 1 to 2 hours in a decanter is advised.
With the last bottles now in sight, this vintage has an added sense of place and timing: a serious left-bank Bordeaux built around cabernet sauvignon, depth and long-term development.
