Amaras Americana is an artisanal mezcal from Mexico, made from Americana agave grown in Tlacolula, Oaxaca, for 8 to 10 years. That long growing period gives the spirit a grounded sense of origin: the character comes first from mature agave, then from careful, traditional production.
Its making is deliberately hands-on. The agave is naturally fermented without sulphites and distilled in copper stills fitted with wooden lids. That approach supports the aromatic nature of the mezcal while keeping the drinking experience smooth and composed.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of mezcal we would introduce to someone who wants to taste the agave clearly rather than be overwhelmed by style. With its 40% alcohol strength, Amaras Americana remains gentle in (…)Amaras Americana (Damaged: Label dirty, damaged or missing)

Amaras Logia Coyote is a mezcal with a strong sense of place. It is made from Coyote agaves, Agave Americana, grown for 8 to 10 years in the Tlacolula region of Oaxaca. That long cultivation period gives the spirit a story rooted in patience, agriculture and respect for the raw material.
Its production keeps the focus firmly on craft. Fermentation takes place in open pine wood vats, followed by distillation in a copper still and bottling at 46% ABV. The result is a mezcal shaped by earth, wood, spice and a subtle smoky edge, rather than by a generic style.

That long growing cycle says a great deal about the spirit before it even reaches the still: this is mezcal rooted in patience, origin and the character of the plant itself.
Its production keeps close to traditional methods. Natural fermentation takes place in pinewood vats, followed by distillation in clay pots, and the mezcal is bottled at 43% ABV. Amaras Reposado is a Mexican mezcal from Oaxaca, specifically the Tlacolula region, with a clear focus on traditional craft. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see it as a reposado that keeps the Espadán agave firmly in view while adding a gentler, more rounded edge through oak maturation.
The mezcal is made from Espadán agave grown for eight years. Its production follows a classic artisanal route: cooking in conical stone ovens, milling with an Egyptian mill, natural fermentation in pine wood vats and distillation in copper alembics. These details matter because they shape the direct, agave-driven identity of the spirit.
After distillation, it spends at least three months in lightly toasted French and American oak barrels. The wood influence is (…)Amaras Reserva Especial Arroqueno Incl. Box

Amaras Reserva Especial Arroqueno is a mezcal built around patience. It is made from rare Arroqueño agave, a plant that needs 10 to 12 years to reach maturity. It is produced by Maestra Mezcalera Diana Orozco in Miahuatlán, Oaxaca, and distilled in small clay pots. That artisanal approach is not just a production detail here; it supports the silky, rich and complex expression described for this mezcal. Amaras Reserva Especial Sierrudo is a mezcal from Tlacolula in Oaxaca, made from the native Sierrudo agave. This agave is known for its lateral spines, which resemble the teeth of a saw, and it brings a distinctive aromatic richness with a clearly mineral edge.
Sierrudo is described as softer in nature, yet more difficult to cultivate. That contrast gives this mezcal much of its interest: it feels carefully chosen rather than simply powerful. Distilled in copper stills and bottled at 46%, it has the strength to carry its concentration while keeping its more refined vegetal and mineral side in focus.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottle stands out for mezcal drinkers who enjoy exploring agave varieties with a strong sense of origin. It is not just about (…)
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about tequila and mezcal
What is tequila?
Tequila is named after the town of the same name Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The drink is made exclusively from the blue agave (Agave tequilana), and production is limited to certain regions in Mexico, such as Jalisco and parts of the states of Nayarit, Michoacán, Guanajuato and Tamaulipas. To bear the name "tequila", the drink must comply with strict rules and be produced within these defined areas, similar to the rules for champagne in France.
Tequila production is deeply intertwined with Mexican culture and history. Originally, indigenous peoples made a drink called pulque from the juice of the agave plant. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived, they introduced distillation techniques, eventually leading to the creation of tequila as we know it today. Today, tequila is not only a drink for the holidays, but also a symbol of Mexican pride and heritage.
What is mezcal?
Mezcal, on the other hand, has broader origins and is made from different species of agave plants. Mezcal production is less regulated than tequila, although the main region for production is Oaxaca, where the drink plays a central role in cultural rituals and ceremonies. While tequila is mainly made from blue agave, mezcal can be produced from dozens of different agave varieties, including Espadín, Tobalá and Pechuga.
The production of mezcal has a centuries-old tradition and is often still made by artisanal methods. The unique character of mezcal comes from the process by which the agave hearts (also known as "piñas") are roasted in underground pits, which gives the drink its distinctive smoky flavour. Mezcal is often considered the "parent" of tequila, as the process is much more traditional and rustic.
What is the taste difference between tequila and mezcal?
In terms of flavour, tequila and mezcal are very different, although they share the same agave base.
Tequila has varying flavours depending on its maturation. Young, unripened tequilas such as blanco have a fresh, sharp agave flavour, with notes of citrus, pepper and sometimes a hint of sweetness. As tequila matures, as in the case of reposado (aged between 2 months and 1 year) and añejo (aged at least 1 year), the drink develops a softer, fuller character with hints of vanilla, caramel and oak.
Mezcal has a much more pronounced and complex flavour profile. The smoky undertones are immediately noticeable and come from the roasting of the agave. Depending on the agave variety used and the production process, flavours can range from earthy and mineral-like to fruity, floral or even meaty, as in the rare pechuga mezcal, where meat or fruit is added during the distillation process. The smokiness, however, always remains a dominant feature.
What is the difference between tequila and mezcal?
Although tequila and mezcal are both agave-based drinks, there are a few key differences that set them apart:
- Agave varieties: Tequila is made exclusively from blue agave, while mezcal can be made from dozens of different agave varieties.
- Production process: In tequila, the agave is steamed in ovens and then distilled, resulting in an often cleaner, less smoky flavour. With mezcal, however, the agave is roasted in underground pits, giving the drink its distinctive smoky character.
- Geographical origin: Tequila is mainly produced in Jalisco, while mezcal comes mainly from Oaxaca, although it is made in several other Mexican states.
- Flavour profile: Tequila tends to be softer and more approachable with a focus on agave, citrus and wood notes, depending on the ageing. Mezcal, on the other hand, is more complex and always has a smoky base, with a wide range of flavours depending on the agave variety and production process.
How do you drink tequila and mezcal?
Traditionally, both tequila and mezcal are drunk pure, often without any additives to fully experience the complex flavours. Tequila is sometimes served with a small glass of water or a slice of lime to cleanse the flavour. Mezcal is often served with a slice of orange and a little sal de gusano (salt mixed with dried worms and chilli) to accentuate the flavours.
Of course, tequila and mezcal are also widely used in cocktails. Tequila forms the basis of the famous Margarita, a refreshing combination of tequila, lime juice and triple sec. Mezcal is increasingly common in cocktails such as the Mezcal Negroni, in which the smokiness of mezcal adds a new dimension to the classic Negroni.
