The flavour profile is led by a clear peated character. Oak, spice and fruit sit more lightly in the background, adding shape without overtaking the smoky side of the whisky.

At 53.7% cask strength, it comes across as firm and direct. The refill barrel influence is relatively restrained, keeping the emphasis on peat and structure rather than heavy wood impact.

Product info about Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb

Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a Highland single malt with a very focused identity. Distilled on 3 September 2012 and bottled on 1 November 2022, it spent 10 years in a refill barrel before being drawn from a single cask. Only 234 bottles were produced, so this is a narrow, individual snapshot rather than a large-scale release.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottlings like this are valued for the way they show a whisky in a more direct form. It is bottled at cask strength, 53.7%, giving the whisky a firm presence and keeping the single-cask character close to the source.

The refill barrel points to a more restrained wood influence, while the flavour profile places peat clearly at the centre. Fruit, spice and oak are present in lighter roles, supporting rather than taking over. With the last bottles now remaining, this release has the appeal of a small Highland single malt drawn from one particular cask and one particular moment in maturation.

About INCHMURRIN

The Loch Lomond distillery is located at the lake of the same name (the largest lake or loch in Scotland). After its establishment in 1814, the distillery closed its doors several times. Since 1993, Loch Lomond has also started producing grain whisky. In addition to having column stills and traditional pot stills, Loch Lomond is the only distillery that still uses Lomond stills: the part between the pot and the swan neck is replaced by a column with three horizontal plates. These can be folded, allowing the same still to produce different spirits. The whisky from Loch Lomond can be found or has been found under the names Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin, Inchmoan, Inchfad, Old Rosdhu, Croftengea, and Craiglodge. Did you know, by the way, that Loch Lomond is Captain Haddock's favorite whisky from the comic The Adventures of Tintin?

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb?

Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a single cask whisky?

Yes, Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb een goede keuze voor mij?

This Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a tarred whisky?

Yes, Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb an independent bottling?

Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a whisky of the Inchmurrin brand bottled by the independent bottler Thompson Brothers. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Loch Lomond 2012 10y Tb whisky from Inchmurrin is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
