The aroma opens with fresh vanilla, cinnamon and light caramel, followed by coconut, shortbread and toasted oak. The Virgin Oak influence is clear, yet it sits alongside a softer bakery-like sweetness.

On the palate it is full and spicy, with butterscotch, pastry cream, black pepper, nutmeg and yellow fruit. The finish is long, carrying roasted wood, vanilla and warm baking spices.

Product info about Glasgow Dis 2016 10y

Glasgow Distillery is one of Scotland's younger distilleries, founded in 2014 and already recognised for its modern outlook and strong quality focus. This 10-year-old single malt captures that contemporary spirit in a bold, clearly defined style.

Selected by Adelphi, this release is among the very first independent 10-year-old Glasgow whiskies. At Drankenshop Broekmans, that makes it stand out: a single cask bottling, drawn at cask strength from a Virgin Oak Hogshead. The cask brings depth, spice and a pronounced wood influence, while the distillery character remains elegant and distinct.

Bottled at 58.1%, it is a powerful Lowland single malt rather than a gentle one. With only the last bottles remaining, this is a particularly interesting way to taste an early 10-year-old Glasgow in independent form.

About GLASGOW DISTILLERY

The current Glasgow distillery refers to one of the first distilleries in Glasgow, which existed as early as 1770, but it is not the same one. In 2014, the Glasgow Distillery Company opened and it was the first time in more than 100 years that distilling returned to Glasgow. Their 5 stills were given the names of important women; Annie, Mhairi and Tara are family members of the owners while Margaret and Frances refer to the MacDonald sisters, important local artists. Glasgow Distillery produces Glasgow 1770 Whisky, Makar Gin, Malt Riot Blended Whisky, Banditti Club Rum and G52 Vodka.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y?

Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glasgow Dis 2016 10y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Glasgow Dis 2016 10y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Glasgow Dis 2016 10y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Glasgow Dis 2016 10y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glasgow Dis 2016 10y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glasgow Dis 2016 10y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y an independent bottling?

Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a whisky of the Glasgow Distillery brand bottled by the independent bottler Adelphi. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glasgow Dis 2016 10y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Glasgow Dis 2016 10y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Glasgow Dis 2016 10y whisky from Glasgow Distillery is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
