Flavour notes

Deep in colour, with an expressive aromatic range built around ripe dark fruit: cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and plum. Finer notes of violet and lavender sit alongside spice, liquorice, tobacco, graphite, pencil shavings, cedar, bay leaf, vanilla and a gentle touch of oak influence.

On the palate it opens with flesh and density, yet remains precise and fresh. The tannins are ripe, firm and clearly present, giving the wine definition without heaviness. The finish is long and aromatic, carrying dark fruit, spice and the structured Saint-Julien character through to the end.

Product info about Chateau Branaire-ducru 2016

Château Branaire-Ducru 2016 is the estate's grand vin, a Fourth Growth from the 1855 classification and a red Bordeaux from Saint-Julien on the Left Bank. Cabernet sauvignon leads the blend, supported by merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc, giving the wine its sense of structure, dark-fruited depth and Médoc identity.

The 2016 vintage is a key part of the story. A cool, wet spring was followed by a long dry and sunny period in summer, while rain in mid-September helped the final stage of ripening. Harvest took place parcel by parcel from late September to mid-October, allowing the château to pick according to the maturity of each plot.

Branaire-Ducru's cellar work is precise rather than heavy-handed: hand harvesting, plot-by-plot vinification in stainless steel vats filled by gravity, and maceration aimed at extraction without overdoing the weight. Around 18 months in French oak barriques, with about 60% new oak, gives the wine structure and polish while keeping the fruit and freshness in focus.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we value for the way origin, vintage and ageing potential come together in one bottle. The château recommends serving it at around 18°C and decanting for at least an hour to encourage aromatic expression. With only the last bottles remaining, it is also a vintage that is no longer simply sitting in abundance.

Deep in colour, with an expressive aromatic range built around ripe dark fruit: cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and plum. Finer notes of violet and lavender sit alongside spice, liquorice, tobacco, graphite, pencil shavings, cedar, bay leaf, vanilla and a gentle touch of oak influence.

About CH BRANAIRE DUCRU

Château Branaire-Ducru is a well-known winery from the French Bordeaux region, more specifically from the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc. The winery traces its roots back to the 17th century and has been classified as Quatrième Grand Cru Classé since 1855, which places it in the fourth category of classified Bordeaux wines within the famous classification of that year. The vineyards cover about 60 hectares and are situated on well-drained gravel soils, which is favorable for the ripening of the grapes. Château Branaire-Ducru focuses strongly on the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, typical for the region. The house style is generally characterized by elegant structure, balance, and a refined expression of fruit, without overly heavy extraction. Under the leadership of the Maroteaux family, who have managed the château since the late 1980s, there has been continuous investment in quality and the modernization of techniques, with respect for tradition. In addition to the main wine, the estate also produces a second wine, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru. The name Branaire-Ducru refers to the history of the estate and former owners, which contributes to the rich character of the winery.
