Promontory 2015 is a dry red wine from Napa Valley, made at the Promontory estate in the western hills of Oakville. A dry and unusually warm winter was followed by cooler weather during flowering, reducing fruit set, and late-summer heat brought further pressure. Picking began early, on 8 September, but Promontory's cooler microclimate stretched the harvest over roughly four weeks. Nearly 54 separate picking passes and 40 individual vinifications give a clear sense of the precision behind the wine.
Its ageing is just as telling. Rather than relying on small barriques, wines from this period were matured for an extended time in large neutral Stockinger wooden casks. Promontory is a relatively young wine brand from the United States, originating from Napa Valley, California. The estate is located in the western part of this renowned wine region, in a mountainous landscape that sets itself apart from the more classic valley locations. Promontory was founded by Bill Harlan, who made his mark with Harlan Estate and Bond. He discovered the land that would eventually become the heart of Promontory in the early 1990s, but only from 2008 onwards were the first wines produced there. Promontory operates on a small scale and in an artisanal way, with a strong emphasis on terroir: the unique, steep, and rugged landscape, with cool influences and slightly unusual soil types, ensures wines with a pronounced character.
