Flavour notes

Château Marsau 2016 brings together ripe dark fruit notes of cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, dark plum, black cherry and blueberry. Around that fruit are touches of violets, liquorice, anise, herbs, tobacco and earthy depth.

On the palate it is described as medium to full-bodied, concentrated and carried by freshness and a chalky backbone. The tannins are ripe, polished and silky, while the structure remains clearly present. The finish returns to dark fruit and blueberry, with graphite-like minerality and occasional notes of black truffle, olive, garrigue and camphor.

Product info about Chateau Marsau 2016 Magnum (1,5l)

Château Marsau 2016 in magnum is a red Bordeaux from Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, on the Right Bank, a few kilometres east of Saint-Émilion. This is the château's main wine rather than its second label, and in this vintage it is built entirely around Merlot from deep clay and clay-limestone soils.

That clay is central to the 2016 story. During the dry summer it retained water, helping the wine keep balance and freshness while reaching full ripeness. The Merlot was harvested in October and vinified patiently, with gentle extraction and parcel-by-parcel, temperature-controlled work. Ageing took place partly in French oak barrels, alongside other vessels of different sizes and materials.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this magnum stands out as a Right Bank Bordeaux with substance: ripe, concentrated and structured, yet with a fresh line running through it. The 1.5 litre format gives it real presence at the table, especially with beef, lamb, duck, game, stews, mushrooms or richer fish dishes such as tuna.

The 2016 vintage also received strong critical recognition, including 94 points from James Suckling and 91 points from Wine Spectator. With the last bottles now available, this is a bottle to approach with attention: a serious Merlot-driven Bordeaux in a format made for sharing.

About CH MARSAU

Château Marsau is a wine estate from France, located in the Bordeaux region, specifically in the northern part of the Côtes de Francs, which has been officially known as Francs Côtes de Bordeaux since 2016. The estate focuses primarily on red wines made from Merlot, the grape that is characteristic for many Bordeaux wines from this area. The vineyard of Château Marsau covers about 12 hectares and is managed with attention to the terroir, with soils that mainly consist of clay, which contributes to the characteristic style of the wines: smooth, full of fruit and generally relatively accessible in their youth. Originally taken over by the Chanfreau family in the 1990s and now under the leadership of Eacute;tienne Mouty, the wines of Château Marsau have developed in recent decades into representative examples of their appellation. The limited annual production and a clear focus on quality make the wines of this estate interesting for both lovers of classic Bordeaux and people looking for something less well-known than the big names from the region.
