Product info about Marques De Riscal Tapias 2019
Marques De Riscal Tapias 2019 is a Rioja with a very specific sense of place. It is the first vintage of this cuvée and comes from Finca Las Tapias in Elciego, within Rioja Alavesa. Made from Tempranillo, it is drawn from a carefully chosen 2.85-hectare selection inside a 15-hectare vineyard regarded by Marques De Riscal as one of its finest sites.The vineyard background matters here. Las Tapias was planted in 1968 using massal selection from very old vines. Its soils, on ancient Ebro terraces, are looser and more stony than usual, with a clear limestone layer beneath. The 2019 season added its own imprint: small berries, open bunches, a Las Tapias harvest beginning on 2 October, and grapes marked by low pH and high acidity.
After 20 months in French oak barrels, the wine reflects the Bordeaux-influenced tradition that Marques De Riscal links to its early history. Its presence on La Place de Bordeaux also echoes that historic connection. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Rioja we like to introduce as a single-site wine first and foremost: a bottle shaped by a named vineyard, a defined vintage and a deliberate style.
Recognition has been strong, with 100 points in Guía Proensa 2023, 98 points in Guía Peñín 2024 and 98 points from James Suckling, who also included it among his Top 100 Wines of the World 2022. Beyond the scores, it remains a dry, concentrated red wine with structure, ageing capacity and a clear gastronomic role alongside jamón, mature cheeses, red meat, poultry and game dishes.
