Clos de l'Oratoire 2020 in magnum is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé with the kind of presence that suits a serious Bordeaux dinner. The 1.5 litre format does not change the wine's identity, but it does make the bottle feel made for sharing. Its vineyard sits on the north-eastern slope of Saint-Émilion, with clay-limestone and molasse de Fronsac higher up the slope and more clay-sand towards the foot. That background helps explain the shape of the wine: generous dark fruit from Merlot, with Cabernet Franc adding aromatic detail, structure and length.
This vintage is certified organic under FR-BIO-10. The grapes were hand-harvested in small crates, sorted before and after destemming, then vinified in temperature-controlled wooden vats. Ageing took place for 16 months on fine lees in barriques, 40% of them new, and the wine was bottled at the château.
These are among the last bottles in magnum, making this a noteworthy choice for keeping or serving at a generous table. Its tannic structure and dark-fruited Saint-Émilion character match naturally with beef, côte de bœuf, fillet of beef, herb-roasted lamb, game or mature hard cheeses.
