Product info about Yjar 2019
Yjar 2019 is a red Rioja from Labastida de Álava in Rioja Alavesa, linked to Telmo Rodríguez and the historic Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri estate at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño. Rather than being defined by a traditional Rioja ageing category, Yjar is presented as the expression of one selected high-altitude vineyard of 3.8 hectares.That vineyard is central to the identity of the wine. Old bush vines, planted as a mixed massal selection, grow at around 600 to 800 metres above sea level on deep loamy soils formed from marl, with plenty of stones, carbonates and colluvial material from the Sierra de Toloño. The blend brings together Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Granegro and Rojal, with Garnacha described as a clearly recognisable component in the 2019 vintage.
The year itself brought a small crop, intense summer heat and late-summer storms, yet soil water reserves and favourable conditions around harvest helped complete the ripening. The grapes were hand-picked between 6 and 18 October, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in small open wooden vats, and matured for 30 months in barrels of various sizes and foudres.
