Flavour notes

The aroma is lifted and floral, showing verbena, lemongrass and acacia blossom. Riper layers follow with dried apricot, quince, white peach, pineapple, mango and green fig, alongside almond, beeswax, saffron, ginger, orange peel and a subtle touch of vanilla.

On the palate it is clearly sweet, yet kept vibrant by pronounced acidity. The texture is viscous to creamy, with a strong noble-rot character and a long finish. Acacia honey, lime and caramelised lemon carry through at the end, leaving a refined, mineral impression.

Product info about Chateau Coutet 2021 Barsac

Château Coutet 2021 is a sweet white wine from Barsac in Bordeaux, and the estate's main wine. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification for Sauternes and Barsac, it belongs to one of the classic traditions of noble sweet wine, shaped here by a vintage that demanded careful timing and several passes through the vineyard.

The 2021 blend is 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Harvest took place by hand from 30 September to 18 October, with four successive tries over thirteen picking days. The wine was vinified in barriques and aged for 18 months in 100% French oak before bottling in June 2023.

What stands out in this vintage is the way sweetness is held by freshness. After a complicated start to the growing season, rain in September, followed by misty mornings and sunny afternoons in October, encouraged the development of Botrytis cinerea. Coutet's cool Barsac terroir, with clay and limestone soils, is closely linked to that lively, precise style. The château connects the name Coutet with the Gascon word for knife, a fitting image for the wine's cutting freshness.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would point out to someone looking for a refined sweet Bordeaux with aromatic detail rather than simple weight. Serve it at around 10 to 12 °C and give it a little time in the glass while young. It has a natural place alongside foie gras, pâté, blue or creamy cheeses, and fruit desserts such as apricot tart, apple tart, tarte tatin or lemon tart. These are the last bottles of this vintage.

About CH COUTET

Château Coutet is a well-known name in the world of French dessert wines and is located in the Barsac appellation, part of the famous Sauternes wine region in Bordeaux. The estate has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century and is especially known for its high-quality sweet wines, which are usually produced from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes. The production involves the use of natural noble rot, also called botrytis cinerea, which results in wines with a concentrated and complex character and typical aromas of honey, candied fruit, and spices. Château Coutet is often listed among the highest category of Barsac in wine lists and has even been recognized as Premier Cru Classé since the official classification of 1855. The domain covers about 38 hectares of vineyards and boasts classic cellars where the wines can age carefully. In addition to the famous sweet wines, Château Coutet also produces a small amount of dry white wine, making the assortment complete. The combination of rich tradition, location on unique soils, and meticulous vinification ensures that the wines of Château Coutet are internationally loved by dessert wine enthusiasts.
