Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 is the grand vin of this Pauillac estate, a wine whose name carries real weight in Bordeaux. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé, elevated to First Growth status in 1973 within the 1855 classification, Mouton Rothschild is deeply associated with Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 2019 vintage, the blend is built around 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot.
Its Pauillac origin is central to the wine's identity. The vineyards lie on the Plateau de Mouton and surrounding parcels, with deep, poor gravel soils over a clay-limestone subsoil. Grapes were harvested by hand between 18 September and 5 October, carefully sorted, and vinified parcel by parcel. Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 Magnum is the Grand Vin of Château Mouton Rothschild from Pauillac, presented in the generous 1.5-litre format. This is a serious red Bordeaux with a very clear sense of place and vintage: deep in colour, concentrated in build and shaped by ripe, powerful yet rounded tannins.
The wine comes from Pauillac AOC and carries Premier Cru Classé status. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the 2019 blend at 90%, supported by 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Mouton's vineyard lies on deep, poor gravel soils with a clay-limestone subsoil, and the château points especially to the Plateau de Mouton as central to the Grand Vin. Le Petit Mouton 2019 is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, made at the same estate as the grand vin and drawn from a selection of the château's younger vines. It is very much a Pauillac wine, but with its own identity within the Mouton Rothschild family.
The 2019 vintage is a blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon and 32% merlot. The grapes were hand-harvested in small crates between 18 September and 5 October, vinified separately and bottled at the estate. This vintage is also noted as having spent around 18 months in barrel, with 50% new oak, supporting a wine of depth, concentration and firm but polished structure.
