Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 Magnum is the Grand Vin of Château Mouton Rothschild from Pauillac, presented in the generous 1.5-litre format. This is a serious red Bordeaux with a very clear sense of place and vintage: deep in colour, concentrated in build and shaped by ripe, powerful yet rounded tannins.

The wine comes from Pauillac AOC and carries Premier Cru Classé status. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the 2019 blend at 90%, supported by 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Mouton's vineyard lies on deep, poor gravel soils with a clay-limestone subsoil, and the château points especially to the Plateau de Mouton as central to the Grand Vin. In this setting, Cabernet Sauvignon brings tannic structure, aromatic intensity and ageing potential, while Merlot contributes roundness and suppleness.

The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and sorted. In the cellar, gravity flow and parcel-by-parcel vinification allow for careful selection before the final blend is made. The wine is then aged for around twenty months in new oak barrels, with traditional Médoc cellar work including topping up, racking and egg-white fining.

The 2019 season brought warmth, sunshine and timely rainfall, and the château describes the resulting wines as deeply coloured, ripe and marked by dense, satiny tannins. The vintage also carries a distinctive artistic signature. The label was created by Olafur Eliasson under the title Solar Iris of Mouton, inspired by the path of the sun in relation to Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. International critics have been highly positive as well, with several scores around 98 and 99 points and a 100-point mention from The Wine Independent.

In the glass, Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 shows an intense garnet colour with purple reflections. The aromatic profile centres on dark fruit, with blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and plum, alongside violet, mint or menthol, liquorice and a clear mineral undertone.

On the palate it is described as round, rich and supple, yet firmly structured and concentrated. Ripe tannins provide the frame, while cedar, cigar box, pencil shavings, graphite, earth, spice, espresso and cacao add darker layers. The finish is harmonious, with freshness running through the dense fruit and tannic depth.
