Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio 2018 comes from one of Barolo's clearly defined sites: the Cerequio cru, between La Morra and Barolo. Michele Chiarlo has bottled Cerequio as a separate cuvée since 1988, made from 100% nebbiolo. The fruit comes from a 3-hectare vineyard at around 320 metres above sea level, with a south-southwest exposure, vines planted in 1972 and 1990, and calcareous clay marl soils.The 2018 vintage had a distinctive growing season. Snow and rain in winter and spring replenished water reserves after the dry 2017 season, followed by a warm, dry summer. In the vineyard, part of the crop was removed to help the remaining grapes ripen evenly, and harvest took place from 6 to 10 October, in the classic Barolo window. Fermentation took place in large oak vats, with ageing for at least three years, including two years in medium-sized oak casks.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Barolo we like to present as a wine of place rather than volume: dry, structured and detailed, with the aromatic lift and fine tannic weave associated with Cerequio. The strong critical reception of the 2018 vintage, including 96 points from Decanter and Wine Enthusiast, adds useful context without taking attention away from the wine itself. With only the last bottles remaining, it is a bottle to open with thought and patience.

Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte.
