Rocas de Sena 2020 is the first vintage released of this second wine from Sena in Chile's Aconcagua Valley. It shows the estate from a different angle, with Malbec at the centre of the blend alongside Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Petit Verdot. The use of Syrah and Grenache gives it a more Mediterranean accent than the main Sena wine, while still remaining firmly rooted in Aconcagua.

Its name points to the rocky landscape behind the wine. Volcanic stones, well-drained soils and a vineyard site around 40 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean all play a part in its identity. The vineyard is farmed according to biodynamic principles, and the 2020 season was warm and early. That warmth brought ripeness and concentration, while cooler Pacific influences helped retain acidity and aromatic detail.

In the cellar, the wine was fermented mainly in stainless steel, with around 10% in concrete eggs. It then spent 22 months in French oak barrels, 65% of them new. That ageing sits behind the darker, savoury side of the wine, with tasting notes referring to cedar, tobacco, mocha, coffee and spice around the ripe fruit.

The vintage also received strong recognition from international critics, with scores reaching 96 points. As the debut vintage of Rocas de Sena and now down to the last bottles, it has become a particularly interesting release.

Rocas de Sena 2020 is described as a dry, medium- to full-bodied red wine with a deep purple-red colour. Its fruit profile moves through ripe red and dark fruit: cherry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, plum, cassis and pomegranate, with a violet-like floral accent.

Beyond the fruit, there is a savoury and balsamic register of mint, eucalyptus, country herbs, green bell pepper, liquorice and Asian spices. The oak ageing appears through cedar, tobacco, cacao, chocolate, mocha and coffee, while smoke, truffle, olive and grilled meat add further depth.

On the palate it is lively and juicy, with tannins that are present yet refined. Some notes describe them as chalky or firm, others as fine and enveloping. The finish is long, dry, fresh and precise, carrying fruit, spice and a smoky-balsamic trace.
